Perhaps the biggest local political battle on the November 2026 ballot will be over Fresno County’s half-cent sales tax funding highways, road repairs, mass transit, and other projects.

“Our goal is to gather feedback from every corner of the county to ensure every voice is represented in the draft Measure C Renewal Expenditure Plan.” — Alma Beltran, mayor of Parlier and Fresno COG policy board chair

Some people will oppose the extension because they don’t like taxes or believe Measure C hasn’t delivered on its promises.

Others, however, might vote against the tax’s renewal because they don’t like the specifics of the spending plan.

Meanwhile, two versions of the proposed Measure C renewal are being discussed right now — publicly and behind the scenes.

Will these divergent stakeholders and powerbrokers compromise and put their combined shoulders into passing Measure C?

Or will they duke it out on the ballot with competing versions, risking that confused voters reject extending the tax?

Sound Off on What You Want in Measure C

Fortunately, voters have an avenue to voice their opinions on what they want.

The Fresno Council of Governments is holding Measure C community meetings throughout the county beginning May 27 through Sept. 10.

Since its adoption in 1986, Measure C has generated more than $2.1 billion locally and leveraged $8 billion more in state and federal funding.

There are sweeteners to increase attendance: Dinner, refreshments, and kids activities will be available at the meetings.

“Fresno County residents are impacted by traffic and transportation projects each and every day,” says Alma Beltran, mayor of Parlier and Fresno COG policy board chair.

“Their perspective is critical when considering how Measure C tax dollars are spent. These workshops will provide residents the opportunity to share their priorities for transportation improvements within their communities, which gives everyone an opportunity to help build the new expenditure plan. Our goal is to gather feedback from every corner of the county to ensure every voice is represented in the draft Measure C Renewal Expenditure Plan.”

Since its adoption in 1986, Measure C has generated more than $2.1 billion locally and leveraged $8 billion more in state and federal funding. For most households, this sales tax amounts to about
$4 to $8 per month through everyday purchases like clothing, movie tickets, and restaurant dining.
