A suspect has been arrested in connection with the 2016 stabbing death of a Fresno store clerk, police announced.
Gurcharn Singh Gill, 68, was working at the Shields Express Mart near Shields and West avenues on Jan. 1, 2016, when officers found him unresponsive behind the store counter.

Gill had suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at 3:58 p.m., minutes after emergency personnel arrived.
Investigators said an unknown suspect had entered the store that afternoon, lured Gill to the end of the counter and repeatedly stabbed him before stealing items and fleeing northbound on Channing Way.

Despite weeks of investigation, detectives were initially unable to identify a suspect, and the case went cold.
In April 2024, with the help of the California Department of Justice crime lab, police identified Bailey Rosenberger as the suspect. Rosenberger was 15 at the time of the killing, police said.

He was arrested in Modesto on April 2, on local warrants and the murder charge, police said. He was transported to the Fresno County Jail on April 10, where the district attorney’s office filed formal charges.
At a Wednesday press conference, Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto described the 2016 killing as a “brutal murder.” Officials said Rosenberger has faced narcotics-related arrests in the years since the attack.
Casto issued a warning to those committing crimes, saying that even if suspects aren’t caught immediately, that they will most likely find them eventually.
