More than 100 drivers were cited in Fresno during a distracted driving enforcement operation aimed at curbing handheld cell phone use behind the wheel on Monday.

The operation resulted in 114 citations for hands-free violations, the Fresno Police Department said in a statement.

California has prohibited handheld cell phone use while driving since 2008.

Under current law, drivers may not hold a phone or electronic device to talk, text, or use apps while operating a vehicle. A second offense within 36 months can add a point to a driver’s record, police said.

Officials urge drivers to silence or store phones out of reach before driving, and to pull over to a safe location if a call or navigation input is necessary.

The enforcement effort was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
