The Madera County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday presented its first-ever proclamation recognizing a K-9 deputy for heroism and bravery, Madera County said in a news release.

Canine Obie, a member of the Madera County Sheriff’s Office, was honored with a Purple Heart for courageous action during a November 2024 pursuit of an armed felon, when he was shot while protecting deputies.

The proclamation celebrates Obie’s courage and dedication to public safety. After a miraculous recovery, Obie has returned to full-time duty and continues to inspire the community.

Sheriff Tyson Pogue praised Obie’s sacrifice, saying, “Obie’s actions may very well have saved a deputy’s life, and we are deeply thankful for his sacrifice. This recognition underscores the critical role K-9 units play in ensuring public safety and highlights Madera County’s commitment to honoring their service.”
