The Fresno County Department of Public Health has confirmed two influenza-associated deaths in individuals age 65 and older for the 2024-25 flu season.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the friends and family of these individuals,” Dr. Rais Vohra, Interim Health Officer, said in a news release. He emphasized the importance of getting flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines, particularly as respiratory infections circulate.

Over 2,600 Deaths Nationwide, 404 in California

Nationwide, there have been 33 pediatric flu-associated deaths, 566 among adults ages 18-64, and 2,011 among those 65 and older as of Jan. 18, according to the Fresno County health department.

California reported eight pediatric deaths, 88 adult deaths, and 308 deaths of seniors as of Saturday.

To protect public health, the county health department is urging healthcare providers to get vaccinated or wear masks in workplaces during flu season.

The department also encourages everyone older than 6 months to get vaccinated, especially those at higher risk such as seniors, children under 5, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions.

“Protect your loved ones, neighbors, and your community. Do your part – it is not too late to get your flu shot,” says Vohra.

The health department is offering flu vaccines through physician offices, clinics, pharmacies, and special vaccination events.
