A “one of one” basketball card found by a Laton boy netted $53,680 at an online auction.

Eight-year-old Andrew Zonneveld and his father Andy ordered a series of Topps Now cards, after the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team victory. They ordered five of the same card featuring legends Stephen Curry, LeBron James and Kevin Durant on the front. They paid $50 for five of the same card.

Normally, the cards have a black background. But Andrew received a special card with a gold background. It was the only card of that type Topps printed, making it rare and sought after.

Goldin Auctions sold the card on its website after receiving 30 bids in two weeks. The winning bid of $44,000 came one minute before the auction closed on Sept. 28.

Because of a buyer’s premium, the amount increased by more than 20%.

“When you have an auction going on, you’re going to find the true value of what you put out there. So, yeah, we were happy with it. And my son Andrew and my family … we’re excited,” Andrew Zonneveld said.

Investing for Family

The elder Zonneveld said he wants to consult with a tax professional about the proceeds.

Some of the money went to buy Andrew more cards. The family will save the rest, Andy said.

“(We’re) planning on putting a substantial amount of the money aside for investing … and stuff like that for tuition and education. We’re going to be good stewards of the money that we got,” Zonneveld said.

Zonneveld said he does not know who made the winning bid.
