The ongoing conflict in Gaza continues to devastate lives, particularly those of children. BBC News revisits several families and individuals one year after the war began, highlighting the profound impact on civilians.

Malak, a young teenager who lost her father and an eye in an Israeli raid, now cares for her newborn sister Rahma. “I carry a pain that even mountains cannot bear,” Malak says, describing their family’s repeated displacement. Her mother, Nawara, expresses constant fear for her children’s safety and struggles with basic necessities.

The story of Muhammed Bhar, a 24-year-old with Down’s syndrome who died after an encounter with Israeli forces, underscores the war’s toll on vulnerable populations. His family seeks justice, stating, “Muhammad was a special case – he wasn’t a fighter, he wasn’t armed, just an ordinary civilian.”

Dr. Amjad Elawa, working at the partially destroyed al-Shifa hospital in northern Gaza, describes the dire medical situation. “We see children who haven’t experienced much of life yet, losing their legs,” he says, highlighting the emotional toll on healthcare workers.

The article also touches on the broader humanitarian crisis, with nearly two million people displaced and over 42,000 reported deaths, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. The Israeli government’s refusal to allow foreign reporters into Gaza complicates independent verification of events.

As the war enters its second year, these stories provide a glimpse into the ongoing suffering in Gaza, where safety, basic needs, and normalcy remain elusive for many.
