In the aftermath of the glitzy Met Gala, a powerful movement is sweeping TikTok under the hashtag #BlockOut2024.

This viral trend sees TikTok users advocating for the mass blocking of prominent celebrities like Zendaya, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, and others, signaling a growing discontent with the perceived silence of influential figures on critical humanitarian matters.

‘Let Them Eat Cake’

The genesis of this movement can be traced to a boiling point triggered by an audio trend on the platform titled “Let Them Eat Cake.”

Creator Haleyybaylee, previously boasting a following of 10 million before posting, used this audio while clad in a floral dress near the Met Gala venue, prompting many users to liken the scenario to scenes from “The Hunger Games.” This comparison frames ordinary users as the disadvantaged districts, observing affluent celebrities enjoying themselves while global crises like the Israel-Hamas conflict rage on.

The phrase’s origin, “Let Them Eat Cake,” is linked to Marie-Antoinette, the queen of France during the French Revolution, who reportedly uttered it in 1789 upon hearing that her starving subjects lacked bread. This anecdote has since symbolized Marie-Antoinette’s perceived detachment from the struggles of common people, a symbolism that persists today.

Haleyybaylee’s video, now a symbol of this burgeoning movement, has been repurposed by numerous TikTok users. In these videos, creators juxtapose images of Gaza with the glamour of the Met Gala, highlighting the stark contrast between entertainment and real-world suffering.

Targeting Their Pockets

The heart of the #BlockOut2024 movement lies in its call to action. Creators not only urge their audiences to block these celebrities but also provide compelling arguments for why such action is necessary.

By targeting their advertising revenue through mass blocking, users aim to convey a message that complacency on vital global issues is unacceptable, especially from individuals with significant social influence.

This trend shows the immense power of social media in mobilizing collective action and holding public figures accountable. It reflects a growing demand among younger generations for celebrities to use their platforms responsibly and engage with pressing social and humanitarian concerns rather than indulging in frivolous content.

The #BlockOut2024 movement serves as a potent reminder that social media activism can drive meaningful change and push for greater accountability in the digital age.
