Two people were arrested on suspicion of felony child abuse after a girl was allegedly beaten with a belt and cord and slapped in the face because she had a boyfriend, Fresno police told GV Wire.

Luis Richard Torres Rico, 34, and Jennifer Vogel, 32, were arrested and booked into the Fresno County Jail, police said.

According to police, the girl’s father discovered she had a boyfriend, something she was not allowed to have.

Torres Rico allegedly struck the girl more than 10 times on her legs with a belt. Police said she was also struck with a cord similar to a cellphone charger, leaving visible injuries.

Vogel, identified as the girl’s mother, allegedly slapped her in the face approximately four times with an open hand, causing visible injuries to her face, police said.

Both suspects were arrested on suspicion of felony child abuse involving circumstances likely to cause great bodily injury or death, according to arrest records.

Jail records show that Torres Rico and Vogel have since been released on bond.
