A 25-year-old Madera man was killed Sunday evening when another driver allegedly ran a stop sign and crashed into his vehicle at a Madera County intersection, the California Highway Patrol said.

CHP officers responded to the two-vehicle crash just after 6 p.m. at Road 28½ and Avenue 15.

Investigators said a 32-year-old Madera man was driving a 2008 Mercedes-Benz CLS550 northbound on Road 28½, approaching Avenue 15. At the same time, the 25-year-old man was driving a 2013 Nissan Altima westbound on Avenue 15.

Traffic on Road 28½ is controlled by stop signs, while vehicles traveling on Avenue 15 have the right-of-way, officers said.

According to CHP, the Mercedes driver failed to stop at the posted stop sign and entered the intersection directly into the Nissan’s path.

The impact caused the Mercedes to overturn and strike a brick wall at the northwest corner of the intersection.

The Nissan driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from his vehicle. He died at the scene, authorities said.

A 17-year-old passenger in the Nissan was transported to Valley Children’s Hospital with minor injuries. The Mercedes driver also suffered minor injuries.

CHP investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The 32-year-old Mercedes driver was arrested at the scene and booked into the Madera County Jail on multiple charges, although authorities did not specify the charges.

The investigation remains ongoing.
