A 33-year-old Porterville man died Tuesday night after two physical altercations with Lindsay police officers who responded to a disturbance at a convenience store, according to the city of Lindsay.

Officers responded about 10:27 p.m. to the Fastrip Convenience Store after receiving reports of a disturbance involving several people.

Police said officers were directed to the man, who was acting erratically and armed with a knife.

When officers attempted to detain him, police said he became combative and a physical altercation followed. Officers eventually placed him in handcuffs and called fire and emergency medical personnel to the scene.

The man did not cooperate with attempts by medical personnel to evaluate him but told them he had smoked methamphetamine, according to the city.

Police said officers later attempted to place the man in a police vehicle when he again physically resisted. During the second altercation, the man lost consciousness.

Officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel began lifesaving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office responded and took over the investigation into the death.
