The Madera County District Attorney’s Office has filed a murder charge against David Moreno in connection with the fatal shooting of a Merced County woman during a domestic violence-related incident.

The charge was filed Tuesday against Moreno, 51, who remains in custody with no bail set, the District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.

Moreno is accused in the killing of Brittney Moreno, 38, who was fatally shot Sunday in Madera County.

The Madera County Sheriff’s Office previously said deputies responded about 11:30 a.m. to reports of a shooting near Avenue 18 1/2 and Golden State Boulevard. They found Brittney suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Deputies began lifesaving measures before emergency medical personnel took over. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Witnesses told investigators that the suspect fled toward Highway 99 in a small white SUV resembling a Toyota RAV4. Investigators identified David Moreno as the suspect and initially warned that he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Sheriff’s detectives later checked a possible address and saw David leave in the same vehicle. The Madera County Sheriff’s Office coordinated with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, whose air unit and ground patrol helped stop the vehicle. David was arrested without incident.

David is scheduled for a pre-preliminary hearing and bail review Thursday, Sept. 3. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 11.

The law enforcement investigation remains ongoing, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
