A 20-year-old Madera man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and several other offenses after authorities say he fought with a Fresno County sheriff’s deputy, forced a woman into his car and led deputies on a pursuit that reached speeds of 120 mph.

Jordan Garay was booked into the Fresno County Jail on charges including evading police, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, and committing a felony while out on bail, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

His bail was set at $200,000. Garay has since posted bond and was released pending a future court date, the sheriff’s office said.

The incident began about 3:30 a.m. Sunday when a deputy stopped a car near Shaw and Marks avenues in Fresno, according to the sheriff’s office. The deputy detained Garay, who was driving, for a DUI evaluation.

Authorities said Garay fought with the deputy and managed to get back into his car. A female passenger had been standing outside the vehicle, but Garay forced her back inside, according to the sheriff’s office.

Garay then rammed the deputy’s patrol car and drove away, prompting a pursuit, authorities said.

The sheriff’s office said Garay drove recklessly and reached speeds of up to 120 mph during the pursuit, which lasted nearly 20 minutes.

The pursuit ended in Madera when Garay crashed into a railroad electrical box near Cleveland Avenue and Country Club Drive, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities said Garay got out of the car and ran before deputies captured him on an embankment along Highway 99.

The female passenger was not injured, the sheriff’s office said.

According to the sheriff’s office, Garay had previously been arrested in February on allegations of evading police and carrying a loaded firearm. He spent two days in custody before posting bond.
