Five states are holding primary elections Tuesday in contests that could shape control of Congress in next year’s general election, with key races unfolding in Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Virginia, and Washington, NPR reports.
Michigan features a closely watched Democratic Senate primary to replace retiring Sen. Gary Peters, as U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens faces epidemiologist Abdul El-Sayed in a contest highlighting divisions between moderate and progressive Democrats.
Michigan also has competitive House and gubernatorial primaries.
In Missouri, Democratic Rep. Wesley Bell faces former Rep. Cori Bush in a rematch in the state’s 1st Congressional District, while Republicans will nominate candidates under newly redrawn congressional maps.
Washington voters will narrow the field in an open Republican-leaning House district, and Virginia’s delayed primary includes competitive House and Senate races after a failed Democratic redistricting effort.
Kansas voters also will choose nominees in Senate, gubernatorial, and House contests, with establishment candidates facing outside challengers in both major parties.
