Visalia police made multiple arrests Sunday night after officers responded to disturbances connected to a candlelight vigil on South Central Avenue and a nearby apartment complex.

Officers were called to the 1400 block of South Central Avenue at about 9:55 p.m. after receiving reports that a candlelight vigil attended by about 40 people had become rowdy and was causing a disturbance, police said.

While attempting to resolve the situation, officers arrested an adult man on suspicion of public intoxication. Police said the group was vocal and initially uncooperative with officers. Officers instructed those gathered to remain peaceful and disperse from the area and stayed at the scene until the crowd had significantly diminished, moved out of the roadway, and the situation had calmed.

Shortly after officers left, police received another report that individuals from the gathering were at a nearby apartment complex causing a disturbance and making threats toward residents. Officers contacted a group outside the complex, where another adult man was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication after being uncooperative, police said.

During that arrest, an adult woman allegedly attempted to interfere with officers and was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest, according to police. After officers cleared the scene, no individuals remained outside the apartment complex.

At about 11:50 p.m., the Visalia Fire Department and Visalia Police Department responded to the apartment complex after a fire alarm was activated. Authorities determined the alarm was false and had been triggered by an unknown individual. Officers found no one at the scene, and the incident was classified as a false alarm.
