Madera police officers made two arrests involving firearms during proactive enforcement efforts during the Independence Day weekend, authorities said.

The Madera Police Department said night shift officers responded to numerous fireworks-related calls while continuing enforcement operations throughout the city.

During a DUI saturation patrol, officers conducted a traffic stop that led to the arrest of Leonardo Alvarez, 20. Police said officers recovered a stolen firearm and narcotics from Alvarez’s possession during the investigation. Alvarez was booked into the Madera County Jail on the appropriate charges.

Later that night, an officer contacted two 16-year-olds near 4th Street and Highway 99. Police said one of the juveniles attempted to retrieve an unregistered handgun before fleeing on foot.

Officers apprehended the juvenile near the county library without further incident, according to police. The juvenile was booked on weapons-related charges.
