The Fresno Police Department will increase speed enforcement throughout July as part of a campaign encouraging motorists to slow down and obey posted speed limits.
The department said additional officers will be on patrol during the month looking for drivers who are speeding or traveling too fast for road conditions.
According to the 2025 California Traffic Safety Survey, speeding remains a leading factor in deadly crashes and is the top traffic safety concern among surveyed California drivers.
Officials said even small increases in speed reduce a driver’s reaction time and significantly increase the force of a crash.
More Than 11,000 Killed in US in Speed-Related Crashes
The department cited the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which reported 11,288 people were killed in speeding-related crashes across the United States in 2024, accounting for 29% of all traffic fatalities. In California, 1,139 people were killed in speeding-related crashes that same year.
Police are urging drivers to plan ahead and allow extra travel time, obey posted speed limits, adjust their speed for weather, traffic and road conditions, and avoid aggressive driving behaviors such as tailgating and weaving through traffic.
The department said slowing down is one of the most effective ways to prevent serious crashes and help ensure everyone reaches their destination safely.
