A man was arrested Friday after police said he strangled and assaulted a woman during a domestic violence incident that was witnessed by two children.

Officers responded at about 10:24 p.m. to a report of a domestic disturbance, according to the Fresno Police Department.

The victim told officers she had been in an on-and-off dating relationship with Irvin Guerrero for about seven years and that the couple shares two children.

Police said the victim reported that an argument about relationship issues escalated into a physical confrontation. During the incident, Guerrero allegedly grabbed the woman by the hair, placed both hands around her neck and strangled her. He also allegedly struck her four times with a closed fist, causing injuries.

The couple’s two minor children were present and witnessed the incident, police said.

Guerrero was taken into custody on suspicion of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury, and child endangerment.

After being processed, Guerrero was booked into the Fresno County Jail.
