The Fresno Fire Department responded just after 1:30 p.m. Friday to multiple 911 calls reporting a grass fire near Church and Clara avenues.

Firefighters arrived to find about a half-acre of grass burning in a large open field. Within minutes, shifting winds intensified fire activity, prompting additional resources to be requested. The blaze quickly expanded to an estimated 20 acres and began threatening nearby residences and an apartment complex.

Fire crews were able to protect all threatened homes and the apartment complex, and no structures sustained fire damage.

A total of 34 firefighters responded to the incident. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Officials reminded residents that dry vegetation and warmer temperatures are increasing fire danger and urged the public to use caution with anything that could spark a fire and to report smoke or fire immediately by calling 911.
