Thirteen people were arrested for driving under the influence at a DUI checkpoint held Saturday night in Fresno, authorities said.

The checkpoint took place at Belmont Avenue and Clark Street from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., according to officials. In addition to the DUI arrests, 42 drivers were cited for operating a vehicle without a license or with a suspended or revoked license.

In total, 268 vehicles were contacted during the operation, police said.

Officials said DUI checkpoint locations are selected based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of the checkpoints is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the roadway.

The next DUI enforcement operation is scheduled for Saturday, June 20, and will be a DUI saturation patrol, according to authorities.

Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
