A 55-year-old man was arrested Saturday evening after allegedly threatening officers and claiming he had a firearm during a standoff at a business in San Luis Obispo, police said Tuesday.
Officers with the San Luis Obispo Police Department were dispatched at about 7:56 p.m. to the 1300 block of Madonna Drive for a report of a man refusing to leave a business, according to police.
When officers arrived, they contacted the man, identified as Steven Wilson, who allegedly yelled at officers not to come near him. Police said Wilson repeatedly claimed he had a firearm and wanted to die by “suicide by cop.”
Police said officers negotiated with Wilson for about 20 minutes, but he continued to threaten officers and refused commands.
According to police, Wilson then reached into a pack he was wearing around his waist, prompting officers to deploy less-lethal dense foam munitions that struck him in the leg before taking him into custody without further incident.
Officers searched Wilson and did not locate a firearm, police said.
Wilson was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on suspicion of felony resisting officers and local misdemeanor warrants.
No officers were injured during the incident, police said.
