Eight people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence during a Fresno Police Department DUI checkpoint Saturday night, authorities said.
The checkpoint was held at Jensen and Cherry avenues from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., the Fresno Police Department reported.
Police said 635 vehicles were contacted during the operation. In addition to the DUI arrests, 41 drivers were cited for operating a vehicle without a license or with a suspended or revoked license.
According to police, DUI checkpoint locations are selected based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. Officials said the primary purpose of checkpoints is to improve public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
The department said its next DUI enforcement operation is scheduled for May 30.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
