A man was killed and a 3-year-old child was critically injured Sunday in a crash on Highway 41 in Fresno, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported around 2:25 a.m. on southbound Highway 41 north of Highway 180 after CHP dispatchers received calls about a disabled vehicle stopped in the middle lane. Moments later, callers reported a crash involving the disabled vehicle.
Investigators said a 31-year-old Selma man driving a Toyota Camry southbound on Highway 41 stopped in the middle lane for reasons still under investigation.
A 33-year-old Fresno woman driving a Kia Optima southbound in the same lane crashed into the rear of the Toyota after several reported near misses involving the disabled car, CHP said.
The impact caused both vehicles to spin out of control before coming to rest in the far right and far left lanes of the highway.
A 3-year-old child riding in the Kia suffered major life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital. CHP said the child was restrained with a seat belt but was not secured in a child safety seat as required by law.
An adult male passenger in the Kia also suffered major injuries and was hospitalized.
The driver of the Toyota was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
CHP said alcohol impairment is suspected to have been a factor involving the Toyota driver, pending toxicology and coroner analysis.
The crash remains under investigation.
