A 30-year-old man was arrested Monday after Fresno police said officers found a loaded handgun, high-capacity magazines, and ammunition during a traffic stop.

Police said officers stopped a vehicle near Jensen and Cedar avenues for a cell phone violation.

During the stop, officers learned the driver, identified as Joe Mata, had a prior felony conviction and was on parole, according to Fresno police.

A search of the vehicle led officers to a small Nike backpack on the rear passenger-side floorboard, where they found a loaded Glock 19 handgun with a 31-round high-capacity magazine, a 17-round high-capacity magazine, and a box containing six live rounds of ammunition, police said.

Mata was arrested on multiple firearms-related charges. Police said a parole hold also was authorized by his parole agent.
