The Kerman Police Department will conduct a distracted driving enforcement operation on Tuesday, targeting drivers suspected of violating California’s hands-free cell phone law.
Under state law, drivers are prohibited from holding a phone or other electronic communications device while operating a vehicle, including talking, texting, or using apps. Drivers who are caught using a handheld phone face fines, and a second offense within 36 months can result in points on their driving record, police said.
Police urged drivers to focus on the road, not their phones, and to pull over to a safe parking spot for important calls or navigation needs. They also advised silencing phones or placing them out of reach before driving.
The department said another enforcement operation is scheduled for June 19.
The program is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
