FBI Still Searching for Man Wanted in California Child Abduction

Federal authorities continue to search for Gilbert Arredondo Hernandez, wanted for allegedly kidnapping his son from Tehachapi, California, in 1997. Hernandez, 61, is charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution and parental abduction.

Hernandez is described as 5-foot-5, 150 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes, and a scar on the back of his head. Authorities say he may be in Las Vegas, Nevada; Los Angeles or San Bernardino counties in California; or in Mexico.

He is also known by aliases including Gilbert Arrendondo Hernandez, Gilbert Arredondo Hernandez Jr., “Gil,” and “Junior.”

According to the FBI, Hernandez allegedly abducted his then-1-year-old son, Austin Cole Hernandez, on April 28, 1997.

A local arrest warrant was issued on May 28, 1997, by the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. A federal arrest warrant followed on November 4, 1997, from the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of California.

Austin Cole Hernandez is now 29 and is described as a White (Hispanic) male with brown hair and brown eyes.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about Hernandez’s whereabouts to contact the FBI immediately.
