Merced Police Seek Public’s Help in Deadly Pedestrian Hit-and-Run Crash

A man in his 40s died Monday, Aug. 26, 2024, night after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene on E. Yosemite Avenue, and police are seeking information on the incident. (City of Merced)

Authorities are investigating a fatal hit-and-run collision that killed a man in his 40s in North Merced.

Merced police said the pedestrian was crossing Yosemite Avenue near Cordova Avenue at about 8:57 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, when a possible Toyota traveling eastbound struck him and fled the scene.

The pedestrian was left in the roadway and was later hit by a Honda Civic. The driver of the Honda remained at the scene and cooperated with officers.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Merced Police Department’s Traffic Division is continuing to investigate the incident and is asking anyone with information or video of the collision to contact Traffic Officer C. McKeeman at (209) 388-7752 or mckeemanc@cityofmerced.org, or Traffic Officer D. Drees at (209) 388-7809 or dreesd@cityofmerced.org.

Authorities reminded the public that leaving the scene of a collision is a crime that can cause additional hardship for victims and their families.
