A wildfire burning in Fresno County grew to 17,638 acres Thursday afternoon with just 7% containment as crews faced triple-digit heat and steep terrain, CalFire said.
The Salt 14-2 Fire, which started Tuesday near Jacalitos Creek Road in Coalinga, is burning in the footprint of the 2017 Garza Fire.
Officials said the fire is moving upslope in alignment with the terrain and wind, creating difficult conditions for ground crews and requiring additional aircraft support.
About 280 personnel are assigned, including 13 engines, three helicopters, 18 bulldozers, 12 hand crews and 20 additional resources.
Evacuation orders are in effect for zones P18B, P25, P27A and P28, with evacuation warnings issued for zones P18A, P24B and P27B.
Wildfire managers say they expect a cooling trend beginning Friday.
