Thousands of Californians are rallying to demand protection of federal funding as part of a statewide Fight for Schools Day on Saturday.

Rallies are being hosted in San Francisco, Sacramento, Hanford, Los Angeles, and San Diego.

The Hanford protest is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. at Civic Center Park, 113 Court St.

Those wishing to attend can RSVP and find further information on transportation here.

Trump Administration Wants to Make Big Cuts

The Trump administration, which is working to dismantle the department of education, has made massive cuts to federal spending.

Many fear that funding for school meals, students with disabilities, and more could be on the chopping block.

The California Teachers Association, which has worked to organize these rallies, said the administration has betrayed public-school students.

What Is at Stake

California, with almost 6 million public-school students, receives about $16 billion in federal funding. That equates to around $2,748 per student.

For example, Fresno Unified received around $238 million in federal funds for this school year.

Federal funding provides free meals to students if they’re a part of a family of four earning less than $39,000 annually. Children belonging to a family of four earning less than $55,000 annually receive reduced-price meals.

One in five Californians experiences food insecurity and depend on school meals.

Additionally, federal funding enables California schools to provide services for more than 800,000 students with learning disabilities. This encompasses over 15% of students.

Other Rallies in California

In San Francisco, protestors will meet at Embarcadero Plaza, Market St. at noon and march at 1 p.m.

Sacramento is hosting at rally and march at Cesar Chavez Plaza, 910 I St. at 11 a.m.

In Los Angeles, there will be a rally at SpaceX, corner of Crenshaw Blvd. & Jack Northrop Ave., Hawthorne at 11 a.m.

Community members in San Diego will meet at Roosevelt Middle School, 3366 Park Blvd., at 11 a.m. They will march through Balboa Park.
