Trump Administration Wants to Make Big Cuts
The Trump administration, which is working to dismantle the department of education, has made massive cuts to federal spending.
Many fear that funding for school meals, students with disabilities, and more could be on the chopping block.
The California Teachers Association, which has worked to organize these rallies, said the administration has betrayed public-school students.
What Is at Stake
California, with almost 6 million public-school students, receives about $16 billion in federal funding. That equates to around $2,748 per student.
For example, Fresno Unified received around $238 million in federal funds for this school year.
Federal funding provides free meals to students if they’re a part of a family of four earning less than $39,000 annually. Children belonging to a family of four earning less than $55,000 annually receive reduced-price meals.
One in five Californians experiences food insecurity and depend on school meals.
Additionally, federal funding enables California schools to provide services for more than 800,000 students with learning disabilities. This encompasses over 15% of students.
