Update on May 12, 2025, at 4:13 p.m.

The California Highway Patrol said that the far left lane of north and southbound I-5 near Grapevine Road will be closed for an unknown amount of time.

Authorities said that emergency and fire crews are still working on the scene.

“As you travel through the area, traffic will be heavy due to the lane closures,” the CHP said. “Be patient and don’t try to work your way through traffic. Abrupt lane changes and rapid accelerations could lead to a wreck causing further delays in traffic.”

Authorities want to remind travelers to follow behind traffic at a safe distance, limit distractions inside the vehicle, keep cell phones away, and focus on driving safely.

Original Story

All lanes of southbound Interstate 5 at Grapevine Road were closed Monday afternoon as fire crews worked to extinguish a blaze in the area, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The closure has caused traffic to back up quickly, and drivers are being urged to seek alternate routes if they must travel south, authorities said.

For those caught in the closure, CHP is asking motorists to remain patient and stay inside their vehicles.

“Do not get out of your vehicle and walk around in lanes, as this is extremely dangerous,” officials said in their statement. “Don’t drive on the shoulder or in the center median. Emergency personnel need these lanes to get to the scene.”

CHP is reminding all drivers to obey traffic safety laws and travel safely as crews continue to respond to the situation.
