Firefighters rescued a man early Thursday after he fell about 25 feet into a drainage pipe along Highway 99 near Island Waterpark Drive, the Fresno Fire Department reported.

Fire fighters responded around 2:45 a.m. and found the man trapped deep within the drainage system, unable to escape on his own.

Fire officials said they worked for over an hour, using rope systems and confined space rescue techniques to get him out.

The man suffered injuries from the fall and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
