A Fresno man admitted to hurling methamphetamine into a federal prison yard, Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith announced Friday.

Garrett Scott Wheelen, 33, pleaded guilty to possessing over 500 grams of a substance containing methamphetamine.

Court documents revealed that on May 1, 2024, Wheelen approached the Federal Correctional Institution Mendota disguised in a facemask, baseball cap, and hoodie.

In broad daylight, he threw four packages into the prison’s recreation yard before attempting to flee.

Authorities arrested him and found more than 3 pounds of meth in the packages.

At the time, Wheelen was on supervised release from a prior federal felony.

Wheelen will be sentenced on May 2. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine, the DOJ said.

The FBI, Mendota Police Department, and Bureau of Prisons investigated the case.
