Six drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence at a DUI checkpoint at Shaw Avenue and 4th Street on Saturday night, the Fresno Police Department said in a news release.

The checkpoint, conducted from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., also resulted in 21 citations to drivers for operating vehicles without a license or with a suspended or revoked license, according to authorities.

Officers contacted 407 vehicles during the operation.

DUI checkpoints are strategically placed based on areas with a high incidence of impaired-driving crashes, police said.

The next DUI enforcement effort will be a saturation patrol scheduled for Saturday.
