Sen. JD Vance of Ohio unleashed scathing criticism of Vice President Kamala Harris over the Biden administration’s handling of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. At a rally in Erie, Pennsylvania, Vance said Harris “can go to hell” in response to a question about former President Donald Trump’s recent visit to Arlington National Cemetery.

“Three years ago, 13 brave, innocent Americans died, and they died because Kamala Harris refused to do her job, and there hasn’t been a single investigation or a single firing,” Vance said Wednesday, referring to the 2021 attack at Abbey Gate in Kabul.

Senator Doubles Down on Harsh Remarks

Vance accused Harris of being “asleep at the wheel” and criticized her for not conducting an investigation into the incident. When asked about his comments, Vance explained his frustration, saying, “Sometimes I get frustrated, and sometimes I get pissed off. And I think Kamala Harris’ failure of leadership at Abbey Gate is something to get frustrated and angry about.”

Harris, in a statement marking the third anniversary of the attack, said her “heart breaks” for the victims’ families and vowed to “fulfill our sacred obligation to care for our troops and their families.”

The Biden administration and Congress have conducted multiple investigations into the U.S. withdrawal and the Abbey Gate attack. A White House report largely blamed the Trump administration for the chaotic pullout, while the former U.S. commander who oversaw the withdrawal testified that he alone bears responsibility for the 13 service members’ deaths.

Some relatives of the fallen service members have expressed frustration with the Biden administration for not providing all the answers they seek. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, has called on White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan to testify about the withdrawal before the GOP-led Foreign Affairs Committee.
