Former Fox News host Steve Hilton is considering a run for California governor in 2026, potentially joining a crowded field of candidates, Politico reports.

Despite the state’s strong Democratic leanings, Hilton, a Republican, is exploring the possibility of bringing his “positive populism” to Sacramento.

Hilton appears regularly as a guest on KMJ 580’s Ray Appleton talk show.

Hilton, who became a U.S. citizen in 2021, has been building his profile in California through his policy-focused group, Golden Together. “He’s focused on policy and my sense is his campaign would be a policy-driven agenda,” said Jim Brulte, a former California Republican Party chairman.

The potential candidate has been addressing key state issues such as homelessness, affordable housing, and education. Lanhee Chen, a Hoover Institution fellow, noted, “The Democrats are all basically clones of each other. … It could create some kind of political opportunity.”

However, Hilton faces significant challenges. California hasn’t had a Republican governor since Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2003, and Democrats hold a substantial voter registration advantage.

Chamath Palihapitiya, a venture capitalist familiar with Hilton’s outreach, emphasized the need for debate on public education and the state’s business climate. “When I think about all the companies that have left the state, that worries me in terms of thinking about the future,” Palihapitiya said.

The Democratic field already includes Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and several other prominent figures. On the Republican side, Southern California Sheriff Chad Bianco is also considering a run.

As the race takes shape, Hilton’s unique background and policy focus could set him apart in a state known for its political unpredictability.
