A 16-year-old boy was charged this week with the murder of 13-year-old Jacob Munoz, who was fatally stabbed during a fight outside a quinceañera celebration on July 6, the Madera Police Department reported on Thursday.

The suspect, identified as a person of interest early in the investigation, was initially taken into custody on July 8 on unrelated charges.

The breakthrough in the investigation came after detectives reviewed evidence linking the suspect to the crime. In collaboration with the Madera County District Attorney’s Office, charges were officially brought against the suspect this week.

“We would like to thank the Madera County District Attorney’s Office for working with our investigators to help bring justice to the victims and their families,” Madera PD said in a statement.
