Local Memorial Day Events

Memorial Day in Roeding Park 

The Central California District Chapter of the Japanese American Citizen League will host the 72nd Memorial Day Service for the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the Nisei War Memorial in Roeding Park on Monday at 9 a.m.

Ret. Capt. Dr. Ernest Kazato will share the history of Japanese American soldiers during WWII, including the 442nd Regiment and Military Intelligence Service. He will speak on the 3,000 Japanese Americans enlisted in the Army before the U.S. entered the war, including Fumio Ikeda from Clovis. Mr. Robert Shintaku will discuss the formation of the Veteran of Foreign War Post 5869 in Hanford by Nisei veterans on its 75th anniversary.

Memorial Day Service at Fresno Memorial Gardens

Fresno Memorial Gardens and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5057, along with the Central Valley Veterans, will host the 61st Memorial Day Service of Remembrance on Monday at 11 a.m. Over 1,400 full-size American flags will line the Fresno Memorial Gardens during the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5057’s official Memorial Day Program. Known as the “Avenue of Flags,” this event features the largest display of freestanding American flags in the West. Each flag displayed has been given by the U.S. Government to the family of a veteran laid to rest in the Gardens.

Clovis Memorial Day Celebration

The Clovis Veterans Memorial District annually hosts a Memorial Day celebration to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom. This year’s event, scheduled for Monday at 9 a.m., features a range of activities including a patriotic concert with the Clovis Community Band, a Gold Star remembrance ceremony, veterans documentaries, live outdoor music, outreach by veterans and community service organizations, and opportunities to explore the Community Heritage Center with story time and crafts.

Memorial Day Picnic at Hillcrest Tree Farm in Reedley

Hillcrest Farms is gearing up to host its annual picnic event in Reedley, inviting attendees to relive the fun of last year’s gathering. Scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, the event promises an array of activities, including Armenian dancing with Richard Hagopian, bounce houses, train rides, and more. Guests are encouraged to bring along friends and family to enjoy good food and fellowship with the community. Registration is free, and organizers urge attendees to share the event details with their loved ones.

The Murph Challenge at Warrior Fitness

Warrior Fitness will proudly be doing its annual Memorial Day workout, dedicated to honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation and freedom. Reflecting on the significance of Memorial Day, the event pays tribute to heroes like Lt. Michael Murphy (“Murph”), whose courageous actions exemplify the spirit of service. The workout, while challenging, offers modifications for all fitness levels, emphasizing inclusivity and community spirit. Beyond the physical exertion, the event serves as a communal opportunity to honor and remember those who gave their lives in defense of the country and its values.

The Murph Challenge

13th Annual Clovis Memorial Run

This Saturday event pays tribute to our courageous military veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, while also honoring active service-members and their families for their dedication to our nation. With activities catering to all ability levels, including a timed 5K run or walk, a 2-mile walk, a kid’s ½ mile run, and a ½ mile senior walk and roll, there’s something for everyone to participate in. Additionally, attendees can explore a resource fair featuring over 20 community organizations providing valuable information on health and wellness for veterans, seniors, and families. Registration includes a hot pancake breakfast, an event t-shirt, and a patriotic medal for all participants upon completion.

California State Parks 

California State Parks is extending gratitude to veterans, active, and reserve military members by granting free admission to 143 select state park units on Monday. To receive complimentary admission, veterans, active duty, and reserve military personnel must present a valid military ID or proof of honorable discharge.

Millerton Lake, Morro Bay State Park, and Pismo Beach are participating.
