Fresno will get some early-spring weather this weekend and through Tuesday as temperatures soar into the low 70s. But don’t get too comfortable — February will have a wet and wild start with an atmospheric river winer storm that will dump rain in the Valley and snow in the Sierra.

The warmer weather is being pulled from warmer Pacific waters by the approaching low-pressure system that is coming from the northeast Pacific and is due by Wednesday afternoon, Jim Bagnall, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said Friday afternoon.

The bulk of the cold-weather storm will be on Thursday, with rainfall totals of 1 inch in Fresno and elsewhere in the Valley and 2 to 2 1/2 inches in the foothills, he said.

Snow levels will drop to 7,000 feet, with 2 feet of snow at lower elevations and 3 feet at the Sierra crest, Bagnall said.

The precipitation is forecast to taper off Friday, but that won’t be the last of it in February. The forecast is for a chance of above average precipitation through the month, he said, adding, “Winter. Finally.”
