In the run-up to the 2024 presidential elections, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are neck and neck in terms of favorability among American adults, according to a recent Gallup poll.

However, independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. leads the pack with a 52% favorability rating.

“It is unclear how much Kennedy’s rating is influenced by his family name as opposed to people’s knowledge of him personally,” notes Gallup. “However, his much bigger hurdle to electability at this point is petitioning onto the ballot as an independent in enough states to be a viable candidate.”

Both Biden and Trump have seen a drop in their favorability ratings since their 2020 face-off.

Biden’s favorability stands at 41%, a significant drop from his 49% rating in October 2020. His popularity has seen a decline of more than 15 points from his first year in office when he enjoyed ratings above 50%.

Trump’s favorability rating is slightly higher at 42%, a small decrease from his 45% rating in October 2020. However, this is an improvement from his ratings in 2021 and 2022 when he faced severe criticism over his handling of the election outcome and the Jan. 6 riots.

The latest results are from a Gallup poll conducted Dec. 1-20 among 1,013 U.S. adults.

DeSantis, Haley Viewed Favorably by One-Third of Americans

The poll also measured the favorability of other potential candidates, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley. Haley and DeSantis are viewed favorably by about a third of respondents.

Biden’s popularity has seen the most significant decline among young adults and non-white adults. Despite this, young adults’ views of Trump remain unchanged from October 2020. Trump’s image has rebounded among people of color, with 35% viewing him favorably now compared to 27% in 2020.

The poll results indicate that Biden and Trump are viewed favorably by roughly equal percentages of Americans. However, Trump is viewed more favorably by men, young adults, white adults, non-college graduates, and Republicans, while Biden is viewed more favorably by women, older Americans, people of color, college graduates, and Democrats.
