Visitors to the Fresno Chaffee Zoo can now see a new baby wallaby in the Roo Walkabout exhibit.
Zoo officials explain that tammar wallabies are born about the size of a jellybean and carried in their mother’s pouch for eight to nine months while they grow.
The tammar wallaby, which is native to Australia, is known for its ability to retain energy while hopping and also its ability to drink seawater.
It has been introduced to New Zealand and reintroduced to some areas of Australia where it had been eradicated.
The Roo Walkabout
Completed in September 2016, Roo Walkabout is an Australian walk-through exhibit that features red kangaroos, wallaroos, wallabies, emu, and kookaburras.
The exhibit’s walkthrough portion is currently open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday during regular zoo hours. The exhibit is free with regular zoo admission.
