The Modesto Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint Friday night at an undisclosed location, officials said.

The checkpoint is scheduled from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. and will be set based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. Authorities said the primary goal is to improve public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.

Police reminded drivers that impairment is not limited to alcohol and can include prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana, which remains illegal to use while driving.

A first-time DUI offense carries an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.

The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
