Dave Regan, president of SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West, is at the center of California’s debate over Proposition 40, a proposed one-time 5% tax on billionaires, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The measure, widely viewed as Regan’s brainchild, would direct almost all its potential billions in revenue toward health care. The Times reported that spending could indirectly benefit Regan’s union members through more secure jobs and livable salaries.
However, that focus has contributed to opposition from other influential labor organizations whose members might not see comparable benefits, according to the newspaper.
The California Teachers Association, California Professional Firefighters, and Planned Parenthood oppose the measure, along with Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Meanwhile, opponents have raised more than $300 million, including over $100 million from Google co-founder Sergey Brin as of early August.
A late September UC Berkeley-Los Angeles Times poll found 45% support among likely voters, down three percentage points from six weeks earlier.
