Two people were displaced Monday morning after a fire broke out at a single-story home on Hawthorne Avenue, the Modesto Fire Department said.
Firefighters were dispatched at 6:12 a.m. after receiving reports of smoke coming from the residence.
While responding, firefighters upgraded the incident to a working structure fire after spotting a large column of smoke.
Crews found heavy smoke throughout the home and flames coming from the rear of the structure.
Firefighters entered the home to battle the blaze and searched the residence after receiving unclear information about whether anyone remained inside.
No one was found during the search, and crews extinguished the fire.
The Stanislaus Regional Fire Investigation Unit is investigating the cause of the blaze.
