Firefighters contained a blaze Thursday afternoon that started in a detached garage in central Fresno and briefly threatened nearby homes and an apartment complex, authorities said.

The Fresno Fire Department said crews responded around 1:30 p.m. to the 400 block of N. Calaveras St. after reports of a structure fire. Arriving firefighters found heavy smoke and flames coming from a detached garage that had already spread to nearby trees and was beginning to approach a main residence and a neighboring apartment complex.

Firefighters deployed hose lines and aggressively attacked the fire while working to protect surrounding structures. Officials said crews were able to stop the flames from extending into any adjacent buildings.

During the incident, flames damaged overhead power lines, causing them to fall into the area where firefighters were operating. Crews continued working in the hazardous conditions and brought the fire under control. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

During the response, officials also noted a vehicle drove over a fire hose being used at the scene, creating a safety hazard and potentially damaging equipment.

Fire officials emphasized that drivers should never run over fire hoses, and instead should turn around, follow instructions from emergency personnel, and use alternate routes when encountering an active scene.
