The Fresno Police Department will conduct DUI patrols Saturday from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m., targeting drivers suspected of driving under the influence.

Police reminded the public that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol, noting that some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can interfere with driving and warning drivers to follow usage directions and read labels carefully.

While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal, police said.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license, according to the department.

Funding for the patrols was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
