The Fresno Police Department released a critical incident video about an arrest on Aug. 20 in which police struck a shooting suspect with patrol SUV to apprehend him.

At about 5:30 p.m. that day, a Fresno police officer on an unrelated call near River Park Shopping Center responded to what police say sounded like gunshots coming from a nearby restaurant, according to the video.

Security camera footage allegedly shows 18-year-old George Ruiz firing a gun at a passing vehicle.

Bullets struck one vehicle, but nobody was injured, police say.

The officer ran toward Blackstone Avenue where he saw Ruiz crossing the street and allegedly try to carjack another vehicle on the street’s west side.

The driver in the attempted carjacking escaped.

Bodycam footage released by police shows the officer running to catch Ruiz near the Chuck E Cheese.

Two other officers in a patrol SUV also pursued Ruiz, eventually hitting the suspect with the vehicle near Sam’s Club.

Before hitting him, the video says an officer spotted Ruiz reaching into his pants. Security camera footage shows what appears to be a pistol in Ruiz’s hands before he was hit by the SUV.

Ruiz dropped the gun after being struck, and officers took him into custody.

Police say Ruiz was transported to the hospital for leg pain where he was treated and released. He provided a statement admitting to the shooting and was booked into jail for the shooting, firearm-related charges, and resisting arrest, authorities said.

Fresno County Sheriff’s records show that Ruiz is still in custody with bail of $575,000.

The investigation is ongoing.
