Fresno police will be out in force on Wednesday looking for drivers and passengers who are not buckled up, as well as those who fail to properly secure children in car seats, the department announced.

The operation aims to raise awareness about seat belt safety and ensure compliance with California’s child passenger safety laws. Under state law, children under 2 years old who weigh less than 40 pounds or are shorter than 40 inches must ride in a rear-facing car seat.

Children under 8 or shorter than 4 feet 9 inches must be secured in a car or booster seat.

Authorities urge families to double-check their car seat setups.

Car seat fitting stations can be located by visiting the California Office of Traffic Safety website, contacting the Fresno Police Department at (559) 621-5059, or checking with the California Highway Patrol.

The effort is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
