Entrepreneur Mark Cuban is encouraging Americans to purchase household essentials now before President Trump’s tariff plans potentially drive up consumer prices across the board.
On social media platform Bluesky, Cuban recommended visiting big-box stores to stock up on consumables before retailers restock with inventory reflecting tariff costs. He warned that even American-made products aren’t immune, as “companies will find reasons to adjust their prices to match,” according to George Carrillo, CEO at Hispanic Construction Council.
What to Buy Now
Experts suggest focusing on items with long shelf lives. Toothpaste typically lasts about two years from manufacture, while soap and laundry detergent can remain effective for 12-18 months if unopened. Other suggested buys include toilet paper and over-the-counter medicines.
The financial impact could be substantial. Analysis from Yale University’s Budget Lab projects that announced tariffs will cost the average American household approximately $3,800 in annual purchasing power.
While retailers may take time to implement price increases as they negotiate with suppliers, consumers who have available space and budget might benefit from purchasing essential consumables now before potential price hikes take effect.
