The Visalia Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint Friday in an effort to reduce impaired driving-related accidents.

The checkpoint’s location is based on data indicating high instances of impaired driving crashes in the area, police said in a statement.

The primary goal of DUI checkpoints is to enhance public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.

In addition to alcohol, the department reminds the public that prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana can impair driving ability.

Although medical and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under its influence remains illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI can face an average of $13,500 in fines, penalties, and a suspended license, authorities reported.

The DUI checkpoint is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
