A 26-year-old man was arrested Thursday evening after running a stop sign and causing a three-vehicle crash that left one woman dead, police said.

The Visalia Police Department said officers responded around 5 p.m. to the intersection of Burke Street and Kaweah Avenue, where Omar Chavarria was driving eastbound on Kaweah when he ran a stop sign at Burke and struck two other vehicles.

After the collision, Chavarria fled the scene on foot but was later located and taken into custody, authorities said.

One of the drivers involved in the crash was transported to a hospital, where she died, police said. Her identity has not been released.

Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. The Visalia Police Department’s Traffic Unit is handling the investigation.

Police asked anyone with information about the collision to contact the Traffic Unit at 559-713-4301.
